The Boston Red Sox have a big series ahead of them. Boston begins arguably its most important series so far in 2021 on Monday night as they begin a four-game series on the road against the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox currently sit eight games behind the Rays in the American League East standings and currently hold a 2 1/2 game lead over the Oakland Athletics for the final American League Wild Card spot.
The Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander Brad Peacock from the Cleveland Indians on Monday in exchange for cash considerations. The 33-year-old veteran was not on the Indians' 40-man roster, making him eligible for the postseason roster for the Red Sox. Peacock signed a minor league contract with Cleveland in June.
The Rays and Red Sox will be seeing plenty of each other over the next 10 days, playing seven times starting Monday at the Trop. Rookie Luis Patino will be on the mound for the Rays, with Nick Pivetta starting for the Red Sox in a battle of right-handers. Going into Monday’s games, the Rays have an American League-best 82-48 record and six-game East division lead over the 76-54 Yankees and eight over the 75-57 Sox.
The Boston Red Sox announced a trade Monday for Cleveland Indians minor league pitcher Brad Peacock, who'd spent the last eight seasons with the Houston Astros.
After yesterday’s demoralizing loss in Cleveland, the Sox sit eight games back of the Rays with one day to go in August. They’re also two games back of the Yankees, but still currently occupy a wild card spot. So that’s good.
Boston left-hander Martín Pérez has become the latest Red Sox player to test positive for COVID-19. Red Sox manager Alex Cora made the announcement before Monday night’s game at Tampa Bay. The team is going through the MLB coronavirus protocols that include contact tracing and testing.
With the 2021 postseason around the corner, the MLB playoff picture is starting to take shape. Which team has the best odds to win this years World Series?
As our own Michael Walsh talked about just this morning, Bobby Dalbec is on a tear. It was only a few weeks ago in which it didn’t just look like it’d be a disappointing season for the rookie first baseman, but one in which it was all but certain he’d lose his job. Now, he’s been better than any of the potential trade targets since the deadline and has his season-long line up around league-average.
Indians catcher Wilson Ramos will require season-ending surgery for torn ligaments in his left knee, the team said Monday. Ramos tore his ACL and MCL in the seventh inning of Cleveland's win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. He fielded a weak hit in front of the plate and was throwing to second base when his left knee buckled and he crumpled to the infield grass.
J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning off Nick Wittgren and the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3 on Saturday night. Martinez, who broke out of an 0-for-20 slump with three hits, drove a 2-1 pitch into the seats in right field for his 24th home run of the season. Martinez also singled in the first and sixth.
Bobby Dalbec drives a towering solo home run to left-center field, extending the Red Sox's lead to 2-0 in the 2nd inning
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran was quite confused when Cleveland Indians catcher Austin Hedges nailed him in the helmet with his throw back to the pitcher.
August is hot. Especially for Bobby Dalbec. The Boston Red Sox are averaging one solo shot a game so far in the series finale against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday, with Rafael Devers getting it going to put the team on the board in the first inning, and Bobby Dalbec followed suit during the Red Sox’s next turn at the plate.
With just over a month to go and the playoff race heating up, the Red Sox are riding a three-game winning streak and looking for a sweep over the Indians on Sunday. Tanner Houck is on the bump for Boston in search of his first win of the season - the rookie righthander has struggled to pitch deep into games thus far, yet to record an out past the fifth inning. Eli Morgan will throw for the Indians to make it an all-rookie affair; Morgan is 2-6 with a 5.98 ERA in 12 starts this season.
It was the most grueling stretch of baseball in major league history: A series of rainouts forced the White Sox to play six consecutive doubleheaders on six consecutive days from August 23-28. They played four games against the Yankees in two days, six games against the Red Sox in three days and two games against the Athletics. All were on the road.
Franmil Reyes crushes a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd to cut the deficit to one run
Dec. 10: Selected RHP Garrett Whitlock from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft. With half-hearted apologies to John Trautwein, Mike Trujillo, and mostly obscure other players, Whitlock has been the most impressive Rule 5 pick in Red Sox history — and the fact that they stole him from the unsuspecting Yankees makes it that much sweeter. Whitlock has been excellent all season, and a one-man rescue team for the recently flammable bullpen, putting up a 1.60 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 62 innings.
Boston Red Sox infielder Kiké Hernández has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be sidelined indefinitely. Manager Alex Cora said Hernández is experiencing symptoms. He’ll be placed on the COVID-19 list along with second baseman Christian Arroyo, who had close contact with Hernández.
Tanner Houck has yet to record a win on the mound this season, but his next chance to do so will come Sunday. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed before Friday’s game against the Cleveland Indians that Houck will be the starter for Sunday’s series finale. He’ll get the ball behind Eduardo Rodriguez, who starts the series off on Friday, and Nathan Eovaldi, who will get the middle game Saturday.
Gonzalez signed a minor-league contract with the Astros 11 days after the Boston Red Sox released him. He reported to the Astros’ spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Friday to begin workouts with the team.
You no doubt already know that Oct. 3 is the night Brady returns to Gillette with his Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a showdown with Bill Belichick and his new quarterback — Cam Newton or Mac Jones. It will be Brady’s first appearance in New England since he told us he was leaving for Tampa on St. Patrick’s Day 2020. Tickets for this game will cost about as much as a seat on Jeff Bezos’s next trip to outer space.
Austin Davis has arrived. Sure, the reliever actually joined the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline when Michael Chavis headed to the Pittsburgh Pirates. But his first few appearances were rocky, to say the least.
The Red Sox and Twins are set to square off in the final game of their three game series at Fenway Park. The two teams split the first two contests, both of which provided dramatic finishes. Boston will role with ace lefty Chris Sale for the series finale, while Minnesota will counter with righty John Gant.
Red Sox skipper Alex Cora wants to strikeout cancer The 19th annual WEEI/NESN radio telethon for the Jimmy Fund has come and gone and the joint effort was able to raise an amazing $3.8M toward cancer research and treatment. Every year the biggest names in Boston come out to give what they can in order to help those that need it the most and this year was no different. The Red Sox were all over the telethon and Alex Cora made sure to lend a hand where he could.
Darwinzon Hernandez hasn’t played since July 29 after he suffered a strained oblique. After he was moved to the 10-day injured list, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said his condition was “worse than what we thought early on. As August nears its end — and the amount of days Hernandez has spent on the injured list grows greater and greater than 10 — Cora provided a brief update on the 24-year-old.
Cora was asked Thursday what he’s seen from Martinez during the recent stretch, and Boston’s manager provided some insight into what the four-time All-Star has been hindered by. With J.D., it’s always interesting, right, because he’s always been aggressive. He swings the bat, but I do believe lately it’s been more than usual,” Cora said on a video conference with reporters.
Alex Cora was adamant the Red Sox still were high on Duran despite his struggles, but never gave a timeline for just when the outfielder would return to the big leagues. That time came much sooner than anticipated. Prior to first pitch against the Twins at Fenway Park, Cora revealed a few roster moves after he was asked if Kyle Schwarber would make his debut at first base.
Lowell officials have engaged a consultant to tally the costs of bringing Minor League Baseball back to LeLacheur Park, as the Boston Red Sox eye a move of the Salem Red Sox to Massachusetts. The Lowell Spinners (Short Season A; NY-Penn League) were among the casualties when MLB contracted MiLB to 120 teams, but the Red Sox did not abandon the market, saying that they would work to keep baseball in Lowell.
BOSTON - John Gant wants to be a starting pitcher in the big leagues, and the Twins righthander will get another chance to show his stuff against the Red Sox at Fenway Park tonight (6:10, BSN). Gant, who was acquired from the Cardinals at the deadline for J.A. Happ, is 4-7 with a 3.77 ERA this season overall. It's his second start for the Twins (he also has seven relief appearances) and 14 of his 25 games with St. Louis were starts.
For the Red Sox, Wednesday night’s 9-6 loss at to the Twins in 10 innings was just another setback against a team well below . with the Sox failing to take advantage of the schedule to either keep pace or make up ground in the American League East. The two teams will be back at it Thursday night at Fenway, as the Sox look to win the rubber match and come away with a series win.
Hunter Renfroe crushes two HRs in Red Sox 11-9 win
Alex Cora just racked up the biggest win of Wednesday. The Boston Red Sox manager appeared on “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria” during the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon and made an incredibly generous gift. Cora revealed he would donate $113.13 for each of the Red Sox’s 72 wins this season to the Jimmy Fund, bringing the grand total to $8,145.36 More than that, Cora also said he would donate $113.13 for each additional win the Red Sox amass in 2021.
There’s no hiding that Matt Barnes has been struggling for the month of August. That trend continued Tuesday night when the Boston Red Sox closer was unable to get an out in the ninth. Hansel Robles came in to secure the 11-9 win against the Minnesota Twins, but had it not been for Kiké Hernández’s late-inning home run, Barnes would have given up the game-tying homer.

Team USA manager Mike Scioscia was quite impressed with what Boston Red Sox top prospect Triston Casas showed during this summer's Tokyo Olympics.
The good news? If the Major League Baseball season ended right now, the Boston Red Sox would be in the postseason. The bad news?
When the Red Sox drafted second baseman Nick Yorke with their first pick back in 2020, it caught many evaluators and people in the industry at large by surprise. Yorke wasn’t at the top of many draft boards, and some critics suggested that the Red Sox plucked him at the No. spot just because they could get him for under slot value.
Boston Red Sox players are determined to feed off of each other in order to boost themselves collectively. Nathan Eovaldi revealed Tuesday during his appearance on the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon how a players-only meeting already is impacting the Red Sox. The squad assembled Monday prior to their matchup with the Texas Rangers and vowed to play and support each other enthusiastically during games.
Tanner Houck probably knows the stretch of the Massachusetts Turnpike between Worcester and Boston like the back of his hand by now. The 25-year-old pitcher has been back and forth between the Red Sox and Triple-A Worcester since he recovered from an injury and officially got called up in mid-July. The Red Sox have benefitted from being able to move him up and down around starts, and the right-hander has had a great attitude about the arrangement, despite how it probably impacts his salary.
The Red Sox wasted seven dominant innings by Nathan Eovaldi, who allowed an unearned run and four hits. Barnes loaded the bases before Ibáñez’s drive to right-center bounced into Boston’s bullpen. Whitlock relieved and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Nate Eovaldi was there for Rafael Devers when he needed it most. The Red Sox third baseman committed his team-high 18th error in the fifth inning of Boston’s eventual 8-4 win over the Rangers on Monday afternoon. Texas ended up scoring in the frame to come within a run.

Travis Shaw hit a game-ending grand slam in the 11th inning, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers 8-4 on Monday. Shaw, who entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth, drove a 3-2 pitch off Dennis Santana (2-3) over Boston’s bullpen. He flipped his bat and looked at the dugout before rounding the bases and getting mobbed at the plate.
Brett Martin gets out of trouble in the 7th inning, as he retires Xander Bogaerts to strand the bases loaded
The Red Sox featured a new look in their lineup and defensive alignment Monday afternoon against the Rangers. For the first time since joining the Red Sox, Kyle Schwarber batted second and played left field. Schwarber, who spent six weeks on the injured list from early July (when he was still with the Nationals) until mid-August with a hamstring strain, had served solely as a designated hitter in his first six games with the Sox.
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has another potentially important option at his disposal. The Red Sox activated Christian Arroyo from the 10-day Injured List, the team announced Monday in a statement. Arroyo hasn’t played for Boston since July 18 when he suffered a hamstring injury during a game against the New York Yankees.
It will be the first time playing in the event for the Orioles.
We are thrilled to have been selected to participate in the Little League Classic next year,” Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias said in a statement. Our players and staff were very much looking forward to spending time with the next generation of players and fans at the 2020 event prior to its cancellation, so to have the opportunity to compete against the Red Sox next season at Historic Bowman Field while supporting the Commissioner’s efforts to grow the game is a ...
AL East: Tampa Bay Rays Boston Red Sox New York Yankees Toronto Blue Jays AL West: Houston Astros Oakland Athletics Seattle Mariners Tampa Bay Rays (77-48) Weekly Record: 6-1 The defending American League champs seem poised to make another postseason appearance. The week began with a four-game set against a Baltimore Orioles club that currently finds itself in one of the worst losing streaks in modern baseball — 18 in a row after the Braves finished them off on Sunday.
Sunday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park has been postponed because of the approach of Tropical Storm Henri. The series finale will be made up on Monday at 1:10 p.m. Boston’s Nathan Eovaldi (10-8) had been set to face Texas’ Kolby Allard (3-10) in the originally scheduled game.
The Red Sox announced Sunday morning the team’s game against the Texas Rangers for 1:10 p.m. has been postponed due to Tropical Storm Henri. Henri is still making its way across southern New England and is expected to make rainfall by 2 p.m.
Enrique Hernández drills an RBI single to right field, scoring Bobby Dalbec to trim the Rangers' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning

Travis Shaw — a 247 Sports five-star recruit and a top-five overall recruit nationwide in the class of 2022 — committed to join the North Carolina football team Saturday on CBS Sports HQ. In Shaw, UNC has secured its second highest-rated recruit since 247 Sports began ranking recruits, and is the highest-ranked recruit since defensive tackle Marvin Austin from the class of 2009.
He is hitting . with five walks and three strikeouts and three doubles thus far. It’s a different at-bat,” Cora told reporters before Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers.
Here’s hoping we’re not headed back to the Loserville drought days when Boston went without a championship team from June 1986 until February 2002. So, which team will step up? And when?
Kyle Schwarber is the designated hitter for the Red Sox game against the Rangers on Friday, but he could be making his return to the field soon. Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes there’s “a good chance” Schwarber will be on the field this weekend. However, it won’t be at the position the Red Sox hoped he would play at when they traded for him.
Xander Bogaerts drills an RBI single down the left-field line and Enrique Hernández scores to put the Red Sox on top 1-0
The Boston Red Sox are on the outside looking in when it comes to the postseason, but there still are 39 games left to get back on track. The Texas Rangers enter Fenway Park on Friday after getting swept by the Seattle Mariners and a last-place record in the American League West. So it certainly seems like a perfect time for the Red Sox to capitalize and get some wins under their belts.
The Texas Rangers begin a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, but it doesn't come without a flurry of roster moves and news in the organization. Rangers third baseman Charlie Culberson was put on the COVID Injured List on Friday after experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. The Rangers are at the 85 percent threshold of vaccinations required by Major League Baseball to have loosened protocols.
The state champion All-Star team will take part in a pregame ceremony on Sept. Here's the issue: when Christian Arroyo comes back, he'll likely slot into second base. I'd be fine with him playing more first base, as I think his injury was a bit of a fluke, but it's not his primary position. Fitting J.D. Martinez, Schwarber, and organizing the outfield into a lineup is an immense task when Martinez is bad at every position besides DH.
The Red Sox offense should heat up as the schedule lightens up In the 19 games that the Boston Red Sox have played since the July 30 trade deadline, fans have watched the team collapse in every facet of the game. The team, which once held a four-game lead in the AL East, has slid out of the second wild card slot and now face a six game deficit for the division lead. After playing 13 out of 19 games against teams over .

Aug. 19—NEW YORK — Garrett Whitlock always dreamed of playing at Yankee Stadium. From the day he was drafted by the New York Yankees he'd often imagine what it would be like to one day step onto that historic field and pitch in front of a sold out crowd. This year that dream finally came true, just not in quite the way the Red Sox rookie expected. "The first time we came here this year (Alex ...
Marcelo Mayer, the Red Sox' first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, earned a top-10 spot in MLB Pipeline's new Top 100 Prospects list.
But since then, Rizzo landed on the COVID-19 injured list and Voit came back raking, which he feels has earned himself a starting spot. I finally feel like I’m hitting my stride after getting a week’s worth of games under me,’’ said Voit following his big role in the Yankees’ doubleheader sweep of the Red Sox on Tuesday. I’ve been a great player for this organization for the last three years.
Kyle Schwarber is eager to show some of his other skills, and the Boston Red Sox likely will allow him to do so in the near future. The Red Sox slugger told reporters Wednesday he’s ready to play defense for Boston. Having recovered from hamstring and groin injuries that sidelined him for six weeks.
The Red Sox All-Star third baseman is batting . with 29 home runs and 89 RBIs heading into Boston’s finale with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Devers has come in clutch for the Red Sox several times, and continues to put himself in with some impressive company at just 24 years old.
Yankees slugger Luke Voit isn't ready to step aside at first base when three-time All-Star Anthony Rizzo comes off the COVID-19 injured list. “I deserve to play just as much as he does,” Voit said after driving in the decisive runs in both ends of a doubleheader sweep against the rival Red Sox on Tuesday. Voit was on the injured list when the Yankees acquired Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs on July 29, and his performance — a .241 average with three homers in 29 games — while healthy at the time wasn't good enough to dissuade general manager Brian Cashman from seeking an upgrade.
How quickly things can change. After a deflating doubleheader sweep at the hands of their rivals at Yankee Stadium, the goodwill and momentum generated from last weekend’s beatdown of the Orioles has been undone. The Red Sox are desperate to salvage something positive from this series with the Bronx Bombers, who are inching up and up the standings seemingly with every passing day.

Tanner Houck has been back and forth from Worcester to Boston quite a few times this season, and that trend continued Tuesday. The Red Sox pitcher was optioned to the WooSox after the 2-0 loss in Game 2 of the doubleheader against the New York Yankees. It’s something Houck has become accustomed to, and never is taken by surprise because the team has been straightforward about the process since Day 1.
Anthony Rizzo is back in the Yankees' lineup after a bout with COVID-19, and closer Aroldis Chapman also was activated Wednesday before New York's series finale against the Boston Red Sox. Rizzo, acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 29, was set to start at first base and bat second. “Excited obviously to have him back,” manager Aaron Boone said.
The Boston Red Sox (69-53) and New York Yankees (68-52) close out a two-day, three-game series Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET.
The Sox managed only 12 hits — 11 of them singles — and were 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position. It was a tough day overall,” manager Alex Cora said. They should be used to it by now.
The Red Sox dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Yankees on Tuesday. Boston has now fallen behind New York in the American League wildcard race tiebreaker. Tonight’s local schedule: The Revolution face D.C. United at 7 p.m.
NEW YORK — When the Yankees last saw the Red Sox, they were heading in different directions. Tuesday, the new-look Yankees, with a balanced lineup and a confidence in comebacks, caught up with Boston and continued to climb back into the playoff race. Sweeping the split doubleheader with a 2-0 win in the nightcap at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees evened up with the team that had tortured them in ...
Velazquez lined a two-run single into center field in the second inning off starter Tanner Houck. Then the Yankees cashed in on the Red Sox’s bullpen struggles. Garret Whitlock, the former Yankee farmhand, issued two two-out walks and then Josh Taylor came on to walk Joey Gallo.
Duran is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader versus the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The lefty-hitting Duran will be on the bench for the front end of the twin bill with southpaw Jordan Montgomery on the hill. Though Duran has typically started versus right-handed pitching since his July 15 promotion from the minors, his opportunities could dwindle with Kyle Schwarber nearing a return to outfield work after being limited to designated-hitter duties...
Xander Bogaerts knocks a 2-run single to left field, bringing home Bobby Dalbec and Enrique Hernández to tie the game at 2 in the 3rd
The Boston Red Sox (69-51) and New York Yankees (66-52) renew their ancient rivalry with a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. That set gets underway Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. ET with Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader.
Aug. 17—The Red Sox are headed to the Bronx for the final time this regular season to square off against the Yankees in one of the biggest series of the year to date. The two rivals will play a three-game set over two days, starting with a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday before wrapping things up on Wednesday night. What happens over these next few days in New York could have an enormous ...
Eduardo Rodriguez was sharp against Baltimore again and the Red Sox completed a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory Sunday.
All right, I’m convincing no one with that approach, so let’s put it another way: The Red Sox have won three in a row and four of five in advance of their compelling three-game series at Yankee Stadium beginning Tuesday. It looks like they’re back. Previous hemming and hawing aside, I do believe they are.
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees know firsthand that it’s sometimes the trades that don’t happen that end up changing the course of history. Alex Rodriguez nearly landed with the Red Sox before the 2004 season, but the Major League Baseball Players Association nixed the deal that would have sent him from the Texas Rangers to Boston because it involved the then-reigning American League MVP accepting a pay cut.
The Yankees might still be on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, but they are certainly performing like a team that should be playing October baseball. The Yanks won another series over the weekend against a great team, taking two of three from the White Sox. Their only loss to the White Sox this season came in Iowa in the “Field of Dreams” Game.
Michael Hixon’s Fenway Park pitch count increased to two Sunday. The Amherst native who won a silver medal in synchronized diving at the Tokyo Olympics threw out the first pitch before the Red Sox’s 6-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. He and fellow silver medalist Jessica Parratto – a New Hampshire native that competed in the women’s synchronized platform, both participated in the ceremony.
Chris Sale wanted to take it all in. He has a new outlook on his big league career.
Condensed Game: J.D. Martinez crushed a three-run home run to back Eduardo Rodriquez's one-run start in the Red Sox's 6-2 win over the O's
