The Red Sox discussed a contract extension with reliever Matt Barnes during spring training, a baseball source told MassLive. Those talks have not yet resulted in a deal and, as of earlier this week, there wasn’t much optimism one would be reached. Barnes, who turns 31 in June, is set to hit free agency after the season.
