Since acquiring Pivetta, the Red Sox have kept him in Pawtucket despite a clear rotation need in the majors. The reason for that was two-fold: Pivetta needed to build back up after serving as a reliever for the Phillies and keeping him in the majors through Sept. would delay his service clock, allowing Boston to have him for four full seasons instead of three.
